A Louis XV/XVI TRANSITIONAL MARQUETRY COMMODE with a breche d’alep marble top, antique coral 18k gold grotesque pendant of breakfront form and containing two drawers inlaid with three floral marquetry panels and with another florai marquetry panei at each side, late 18th century 3 drawer dresser with ebony pulls on cabriole legs, and with simple gilt-bronze mounts, antique german drop front desk 4ft. 2in. wide (127cm.) circa 1775.
An almost identical commode was sold in these rooms, eugene schoen 6th July 1979, wood and metal buffet lot 247.

These encoignures are similar to a group of furniture probably made by Vandercruse under the direction of Joubert, coaching horn Ebeniste du Roi from 1763 until 1774. The group consists of a
commode supplied by Joubert in 1769 for the apartments of Louis XV’s daughter, rosso antico redware chinoiserie Madame Louise; another commode, antique drop top desk dresser and a secretaire en suite both delivered in 1774, circa 1720 drop leaf gate leg table mahogany oval top for Madame Adelaide’s bedchamber at Marly; another secretaire sold from the collection of Lord Wharton, victorian vases by kingwood Christie’s 19th March 1970, antique lacquer bamboo display cabinet lot 100. All of these pieces have the same trellis design faced with studs and the Vitruvian scroll frieze, antique daybed sofa movable sides but there are differences in the mounts.

Foullet JME, antique victorian 8′ economy table with a brescia marble top above a guilloche frieze and two deep long drawers applied with gilt-bronze olive-leaf wreaths framine three ornate urns in landscapes, pilgram century desk drawer constuction and flanked by garlands of flowers, prunus cracked ice jar the apron applied with flowers and an incense-burner, with canted corners and similarly panelled sides, antique square georgian hall stands on cabriole legs ending in sabots, sutherland gate-leg table 2ft.high by 4ft. W/2in. wide (88cm. by 151cm.) circa.
Pierre-Antoine Foullet, antique oriental porcelain gilded handle received Master 1765.
Several similar commodes exist by Foullet. Svend Eriksen Early Neo-Classicism in trance, lachenal king tut plate 132, greek end tables illustrates a similar commode by Foullet in Frederiksborg Castle Denmark, antique mirror with phoenix on which the central marquetry vase is after an engraving by Maurice Jacques.
Another was sold from the collection of  Ford II, black and gold empire dining table Christie’s New York, antique medal leg folding table 12th November 1981.

A PAIR OF GOOD EARLY LOUIS XVI GILT-BRONZE CHENETS, pie crust shapes in wood carving each in the form of pierced flaming urn on tripod support mounted with lions’ masks and swags of fruit, the bases cast with fluting and leafy scroll-work and surmounted by a pomegranate finial and with paw feet and plinth base, round deco dining table 16in. high (41cm.) circa 1775.

AN UNUSUAL LOUIS XVI GILT-BRONZE AND MARBLE CLOCK, the lord wharton sale christies 1970 the enamel dial contained in a case in the form of a man-of-war on a stormy sea, antique alabaster lady lamp and stand with the figures of Goddess holding a portrait of Louis XVI and a band with an inscription and a mariner holding an oar, tall shallow mission bookcase the rectangular base with a band of leaf-scrolls, square shaped shell cameo brooch high (47cm.) circa 1780, acanthus leaves are a feature oflater movement.
A similar clock is illustrated by Tardy, chinese chippendale pierced ladder back chairs La Pendule Francaise, narrow modern sideboard part II, crossbanded mahogany page 246.

A Louis XV MARQUETRY SMALL SECRETAIRE EN PENTE, inlaid overall with florai marquetry on a chevron ground within gilt-bronze borders cast with leaves and strapwork, the sloping front enclosing a fitted interior with three small drawers and а well, and with shaped frieze and cabriole legs, 2ft. high by 2ft.wide (85cm. by 70cm.) mid-18th Century.

A Louis XV GILT-BRONZE MOUNTED MEISSEN FIGURE of a bagpiper, seated playing his instrument, on a leaf-scroll gilt-bronze base, 7in. high (17.5cm.) mid-18th Century.

A PAIR OF LOUIS XV GILT BRONZE CANDLESTICKS attributed to the Slodtz Brothers, with rococo cast nozzles, baluster stems and shaped bases, high (24cm.) mid-18th Century.

A very similar pair of candlesticks is in the Wallace Collection, catalogue number F76 and 77. In the catalogue entry Sir Francis Watson notes that: the design bears а general resemblance to а реп and ink drawing for a candle-stick by one of the brothers Slodtz, which is now in the Bibliotheaue Nationale, Paris (repr. Portefeuille, pl. 124).

The five Slodtz brothers were sons of Sebastien Slodtz (1655-1726). Three of them, Antoine-Sebastien (c. 1695-1754), Paul-Ambroise (1702-1758), and Rene-Michel (1705-1764), are known to have worked for the French Royal family and each in turn became Dessinateur de la Chambre du Roi.

A Louis XV BRONZE AND GILT-BRONZE ELEPHANT CLOCK, the circular white enamel dial signed Jean-Baptiste Baillon, the movement signed J-B Baillon a Paris, No. 1561, contained within a drum surmounted by a seated Chinaman and flanked by branches of porcelain flowers, all supported on the back of an elephant on a rockwork base mounted with four panels of black lacquer, 21in. high (53.5cm.) mid-18th Century.

A RARE LOUIS XV PAINTED AND GILT-BRONZE MANTEL CLOCK in the Chinese taste, the enamel dial signed L. Montjoye A Paris and with blue chapters and pierced gilt hands, the movementwith outside count wheel and short pendulum, the case composed of rococo shellwork, scrolls, leaves and flowers and with а топкеу cresting, two Chinese figures flanking the dial, their robes with scarlet linings and decorated with delicately drawn gilt flowers and birds, the rockwork base with a third and larger figure seated on the back of a lion, whin. high (54.5cm.) mid-18th Century.

A RARE LOUIS XV CHINOISERIE MANTEL CLOCK with a white enamel dial signed Etienne Le Noire A Paris, the similarly signed movement with outside numbered count wheel, and contained within a red-lacquered drum-shaped case surmounted by а lacquered bronze figure in a black and red robe picked out in gilding, supported on two similarly dressed figures, lOVzin. high by lOin. wide (21 cm. by 25.5cm.) mid-18th Century, original base missing, now with a kidney-shaped white marble base.

A very similar clock, in the Riahi Collection, also by Lenoir, and with identical chinoiserie figures, but with its original base and also branches of porcelain flowers was exhibited Louis XV, un Moment de Perfection de Г Art Frangais, Hotel de La Monnaie, Paris 1974, catalogue number 442, illustrated.

A Louis XV GILT-BRONZE, MEISSEN PORCELAIN AND LACQUER BOUGEOIR D’APPLIQUE with pierced leaf-scroll handle, faced with a seated figure holding two shells and flanked by flower-mounted branches, the base formed of a Japanese lacquer saucer centred by a leafy candle-nozzle, lOVzin. high (27cm.) mid-18th Century, snuffer lacking.

A LOUIS XV GILT-BRONZE MANTEL CLOCK, the circular white enamel dial signed Clement a Paris, and contained within a baluster-shaped case formed of moulded rococo scroll work, surmounted by a cloud and sun-burst cresting topped by a figure of cupid, struck with the crowned С mark, 19′/гт. high (50cm.).
A clock with similar case but surmounted by a cockerel and with a bracket is in the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, and is illustrated by Tardy, La Pendule Frangaise, p. 193

A Louis XV/XVI SMALL TRANSITIONAL MARQUETRY COMMODE stamped J. N. MalleJME with moulded white mottled grey marble top, the carcase veneered in tulip-wood and with two drawersveneered sans travers with urns, domestic utensils and а wreath enclosing a basket of flowers, each side with an urn of flowers and raised on simple cabriole legs with ormolu mounts.
Louis-Noel Malle born 1734, was received Master in 1765 and died 1782.

A RARE Louis XV BOULLE ENCOIGNURE, the top elaborately inlaid with strapwork and florai decoration, the bowed front above a pair of cupboard doors similarly decorated with sphinxes and masks, with a curving apron and fluted canted corners applied with ormolu mounts, 2ft. 8in. high by 2ft. 5in. wide (82cm. by 74cm.) circa 1740, the top and door panels, circa 1700.

AN UNUSUAL LOUIS XV KINGwOOD wHEEL BAROMETER mounted in gilt bronze and with an 8-inch silvered register plate signed Сарру Paris below a Fahrenheit thermometer with tapering plate, the case in chevron-veneered wood and outlined with rococo mounts composed of scrollwork, leaves and flowers, 41cm. high (104cm.) mid-18th Century, altered.

Previously sold, together with the following lot, at Christie’s on 29th Типе 1972, Lot 59 Compare the barometer with identical mounts in the Wallace Collection (F 69; illustrated in the Catalogue, plate 3). The catalogue entry draws attention to a pair of boulle barometers with similar mounts in the collection of the Marquess of Cholmondley at Houghton Hall, Norfolk.

A LATE LOUIS XV GILT-BRONZE CARTEL CLOCK, the enamel dial signed Ches. Balthazar Fils and with pierced gilt hands, the movement with chamfered corners to the plates, altered verge escapement with silk suspension and outside count wheel, the back-plate signed Ches. Balthazar fils A Paris No. 102, in a well modelled case with an urn cresting, pine-apple finials, drapery and acanthus framing the dial and a maskof Flora below, her hair dressed with a string of pearls and a wreath of summer flowers.
Louis-Charles Balthazar (the name is seen spelt several ways), son of Henri-Charles, was received Master in 1761 or 1768.

A LATE LOUIS XV MARQUETRY BONHEUR DU JOUR, the galleried superstructure with three cupboard doors above three drawers with spring-operated opening-mechanisms, the projecting table stand with a fitted writing drawer, raised on cabriole legs ending in gilt-bronze sabots, inlaid on all sides with pictorial scenes, trophies, urns and household objects, 3ft. wide (103cm. by 80cm.) circa 1770, bearing a paper label Earlof Rosebery.
Provenance: The Earl of Rosebery, Mentmore Towers, sold in these rooms 17th April 1964.

The present piece is sold with instructions on the working of the catches and lock and attention is drawn to the fact that the key to unlock the main drawer must not be turned more than one-eighth. Once the key is turned too far the drawer remains locked and can only be opened by removing bolts from the bottom of the table.

The crowned С was a tax mark used between 5th March 1745 and 4th February 1749 on copper and all alloys incorporating copper. The letter С (for Cuivre) appears in two or

possibly three sizes.

Hin. high by 5ft. 2in. wide (212cm. by 157cm.) circa 1755, possibly Irish, some eagles missing.

A PAIR OF GEORGE II MAHOGANY LIBRARY ARMCHAIRS, the rectangular stuffed backs with padded arms and downswept acanthus leaf-carved supports to a stuffed seat, the seatrails centred by an acanthus leaf spray within a double scroll and flanked by acanthus leaf carving, the scrolled and acanthus leaf-carved legs on hairy paw feet, circa 1755, probably Irish.

A RARE LATE GEORGE II MAHOGANY WARDROBE OR PRESS, the tall moulded cornice centred by a scroll panel with a pair of blind thirteen-panel doors, the bars centred by Gothic strapwork and enclosing three tray shelves, flanked by moulded canted corners, the lower part with a blind fret frieze containing a pair of drawers above three long drawers with canted corners and gadrooned ogee feet, 6ft. 5in. high by 4ft. 2in. wide (196cm. by 127cm.) circa 1750.

A FINE GEORGE III MAHOGANY RENT TABLE, the leather-lined top centred by a crossbanded hinged flap with engraved brass escutcheon, the frieze with wedge-shaped drawers inlaid with ivory letters of the alphabet, on a turned stem and four cabriole legs with castors, 2ft. 4in. high by 3ft. 8in. diameter (71cm. by 112cm.) circa 1760.

AN EARLY GEORGE III IRISH MAHOGANY BOTTLE TRAY with central pierced handle and eight divisions, the frieze centred by a shell and carved with acanthus leaves on acanthus leaf-carved cabriole legs and carved pad feet, Ift. Win. high by 2ft. lin. wide (56cm. by 63.5cm.) circa 1760.

A GOOD GEORGE II MAHOGANY BOWL STAND, the moulded ring-support on three pillars joined by a triangular platform with two drawers and a lidded spherical bowl, raised on three

pillars joined by a platform raised on cabriole legs, 2}t. 7V2in. high by lft. diam. (80cm. by 31cm.) circa 1740.

A FINE GEORGE II MAHOGANY TRIPOD TABLE, the shaped circular hinged top on a “bird-cage” support and stop-fluted pillar, the cabriole legs carved with leafy cabochons at the

knees and ending in pad feet carved with rieh cabochons, 2ft. 5V2in. high by 3ft. diameter (74cm. by 91cm.) circa 1750.

AN EARLY GEORGE III MAHOGANY SIDE TABLE with a rectangular mottled beige marble top, the freize inlaid with a Chinese fret pattern, on chamfered legs headed by later pierced brackets, 2ft. 6l/2in. high by 4ft. 4in. wide (77cm. by 132cm.) circa 1765, one back leg damaged.
A design for a side table, very similar to the above lot, appears in Thomas Chippen-dale’s Director (1754), plate XVI.
