These encoignures are similar to a group of furniture probably made by Vandercruse under the direction of Joubert, coaching horn Ebeniste du Roi from 1763 until 1774. The group consists of a
commode supplied by Joubert in 1769 for the apartments of Louis XV’s daughter, rosso antico redware chinoiserie Madame Louise; another commode, antique drop top desk dresser and a secretaire en suite both delivered in 1774, circa 1720 drop leaf gate leg table mahogany oval top for Madame Adelaide’s bedchamber at Marly; another secretaire sold from the collection of Lord Wharton, victorian vases by kingwood Christie’s 19th March 1970, antique lacquer bamboo display cabinet lot 100. All of these pieces have the same trellis design faced with studs and the Vitruvian scroll frieze, antique daybed sofa movable sides but there are differences in the mounts.

Several similar commodes exist by Foullet. Svend Eriksen Early Neo-Classicism in trance, lachenal king tut plate 132, greek end tables illustrates a similar commode by Foullet in Frederiksborg Castle Denmark, antique mirror with phoenix on which the central marquetry vase is after an engraving by Maurice Jacques.

AN UNUSUAL LOUIS XVI GILT-BRONZE AND MARBLE CLOCK, the lord wharton sale christies 1970 the enamel dial contained in a case in the form of a man-of-war on a stormy sea, antique alabaster lady lamp and stand with the figures of Goddess holding a portrait of Louis XVI and a band with an inscription and a mariner holding an oar, tall shallow mission bookcase the rectangular base with a band of leaf-scrolls, square shaped shell cameo brooch high (47cm.) circa 1780, acanthus leaves are a feature oflater movement.

A PAIR OF LOUIS XV GILT BRONZE CANDLESTICKS attributed to the Slodtz Brothers, with rococo cast nozzles, baluster stems and shaped bases, high (24cm.) mid-18th Century.

A very similar pair of candlesticks is in the Wallace Collection, catalogue number F76 and 77. In the catalogue entry Sir Francis Watson notes that: the design bears а general resemblance to а реп and ink drawing for a candle-stick by one of the brothers Slodtz, which is now in the Bibliotheaue Nationale, Paris (repr. Portefeuille, pl. 124).

The five Slodtz brothers were sons of Sebastien Slodtz (1655-1726). Three of them, Antoine-Sebastien (c. 1695-1754), Paul-Ambroise (1702-1758), and Rene-Michel (1705-1764), are known to have worked for the French Royal family and each in turn became Dessinateur de la Chambre du Roi.

A Louis XV BRONZE AND GILT-BRONZE ELEPHANT CLOCK, the circular white enamel dial signed Jean-Baptiste Baillon, the movement signed J-B Baillon a Paris, No. 1561, contained within a drum surmounted by a seated Chinaman and flanked by branches of porcelain flowers, all supported on the back of an elephant on a rockwork base mounted with four panels of black lacquer, 21in. high (53.5cm.) mid-18th Century.

A RARE LOUIS XV PAINTED AND GILT-BRONZE MANTEL CLOCK in the Chinese taste, the enamel dial signed L. Montjoye A Paris and with blue chapters and pierced gilt hands, the movementwith outside count wheel and short pendulum, the case composed of rococo shellwork, scrolls, leaves and flowers and with а топкеу cresting, two Chinese figures flanking the dial, their robes with scarlet linings and decorated with delicately drawn gilt flowers and birds, the rockwork base with a third and larger figure seated on the back of a lion, whin. high (54.5cm.) mid-18th Century.

A LOUIS XV GILT-BRONZE MANTEL CLOCK, the circular white enamel dial signed Clement a Paris, and contained within a baluster-shaped case formed of moulded rococo scroll work, surmounted by a cloud and sun-burst cresting topped by a figure of cupid, struck with the crowned С mark, 19′/гт. high (50cm.).

Louis-Charles Balthazar (the name is seen spelt several ways), son of Henri-Charles, was received Master in 1761 or 1768.

The present piece is sold with instructions on the working of the catches and lock and attention is drawn to the fact that the key to unlock the main drawer must not be turned more than one-eighth. Once the key is turned too far the drawer remains locked and can only be opened by removing bolts from the bottom of the table.

A Louis XV PAINTED AND PARCEL-GILT MARQUISE, with flower-and leaf-carved
moulded frame, the upholstered back, padded arms and stuffed seat covered in con-
temporary Aubusson tapestry with a figure and animals, raised on cabriole legs, mid-18th
Century.

A Louis XV PAINTED FAUTEUIL, the padded back with moulded arched top lightly carved with flowers, with padded arms and the serpentine fronted flower-carved seatrail on cabriole

legs headed by flowers, painted in gilt and white, circa 1750.

A FINE Louis XV GILT-BRONZE CARTEL CLOCK, the damaged enamelled dial
signed Lepaute Hger. du Roy, and with calendar hand, the movement now with vertical
Iever escapement, the case composed of shellwork decorated with sprays of flowers and
with figures of Flora as cresting and a triton below, the base stamped Caffieri Fecit, 43in.
high (109cm.) circa 1755, the dial and movement altered.

A Louis XV KINGWOOD AND TULIPWOOD PARQUETRY BUREAU PLAT stamped А
Criaerd JME and with a cartouche-shaped tooled leather brass-bound top, with three
frieze drawers on cabriole legs with elaborate gilt-bronze scrolling mounts ending in
sabots, the whole inlaid in a geometric design, the mounts ivith the crowned С mark,
2ft. 4in. high by 5ft. 3lhin. wide (71 cm. by 130.5cm.) circa 1745-9.

The crowned С was a tax mark used between 5th March 1745 and 4th February 1749 on copper and all alloys incorporating copper. The letter С (for Cuivre) appears in two or

possibly three sizes.

A Louis XV PAINTED BERGERE, the stuffed curving back within a moulded and
leaf-carved frame with padded, down-curved arms on cabriole legs carved with flower-
heads at the knees, circa 1750.
Provenance: One of the pair of bergeres in the collection of Anna Thomson Dodge, sold Christie’s 24th June 1971, lot 51.

A Louis XV BEECHWOOD BERGERE, the padded rectangular back within а
moulded leaf-carved frame flanked by projecting wings, with out-curved padded arms and
loose cushion serpentine-fronted seat, on cabriole legs carved with cabochons at the knees,
circa 1740.
Formerly in the collection of Mrs. Меуег-Sassoon, sold in these Rooms 25th June 1965, Lot 85.

AN EARLY LOUIS XV WALNUT FAUTEUIL, the moulded frame with an arched
back topped by a melon-flower, with padded arms and scroll supports and the flower-
carved serpentine-fronted seatrail on moulded cabriole legs, circa 1750.

A PAIR OF REGENCE BRONZE AND GILT-BRONZE CHENETS, each in the form of а
dragon, standing on an elaborate scroll base cast with leaves, lVhin. high (29cm.) circa
1720.

A PAIR OF LOUIS XV GILT-BRONZE CANDELABRA, each with a seated Chinese
figure with a gilt-bronze tree at one side mounted with porcelain flowers, on pierced
rococo bases, 13in. high (33cm.) mid-18th Century.

A PAIR OF Louis XV GILT-BRONZE AND MEISSEN PORCELAIN CANDELABRA, each with a seated figure, one of Summer and the other of Winter, with flowering branches behind, each

supporting two candle-nozzles, 8in. high (20cm.) mid-18th Century.

AN IMPORTANT LOUIS XV GILT-BRONZE CARTEL CLOCK, the circular white
enamel dial signed Berthout, Paris, and surmounted by a cherub playing with doves
in a cloud-borne chariot before a sun-burst, with Venus and Cupid below the dial, 3ft. 5in.
high (105cm.), mid-18th Century, later dial and movement.
A cartel clock with almost identical case in the Kunstindustrimuseet, Oslo, is illustrated by Tardy, La Pendule Frangaise, p. 193.

A Louis XV KIDNEY-SHAPED MARQUETRY TABLE EN CHIFFONIERE, the top inlaid
with a florai cartouche containing a musical trophy, above a tambour panelled to resemble
bound leather books and enclosing an arrangefnent of four drawers, with two hinged
drawers at one side, on hipped cabriole legs ending in sabots, 2ft. 4Шп. high by lft. lOin.
(72cm. by 56cm.) circa 1760.

A FINE LOUIS XV MARQUETRY TABLE stamped BVRB and with gilt-bronze
mounts, the hinged serpentine top inlaid with chrysanthemum, carnations and tulips
within a strapwork frame and enclosing a compartment, the frieze with a slide and a fitted
drawer at one side, on cabriole legs with flower-cast mounts joined by a conforming
platform stretcher and ending in sabots, 2ft. high by lft. 5in. wide (69cm. by 43cm.)
mid-18th Century.
Bernard van Risenburgh II (Vanrisenbergh), received Master before 1730, died c. 1765.

Macret, of serpentine shape with gilt-bronze mounts and mottled rust and grey marble
top, the two short and one long drawer raised on splayed legs, 2ft. 9in. high by 3ft. 2V2in.
wide (84cm. by 98cm.) mid-18th Century.

A Louis XV BLACK LACQUER COMMODE stamped Lardin, with a mottled grey marble top and of bombe serpentine shape, the front with two short and one long drawer and inset with

Chinese lacquer panels of figures and flowering trees, the mounts formed of attenuated leafy scroll-work in the form of a central cartouche, encadrements, corner mounts and

sabots, 2ft. lOin. high by 3ft. 9in. wide (86cm. by 114cm.) circa 1750.

A Louis XV EBONISED LONGCASE CLOCK, the twenty-five piece enamel dial signed Goret A Paris and with similarly signed backplate and centre seconds, the movement with rectangular

plates, replaced anchor escapement, compensated grid-iron pendulum and outside numbered count-wheel, the shaped case with panels outlined in stringing and a bull’s eye, the

whole decorated with gilt-bronze mounts composed of foliate scrolls and bands of guilloche, 7ft. 2in. high (218cm.) circa 1730.

A LOUIS XV GILT-BRONZE MOUNTED PARQUETRY COMMODE, the serpentine
bombe front with two short and two long drawers, mounted with leaf and flower-cast
rococo mounts with hoof sabots, 2ft. lOin. high by 4ft. 2in. wide (86cm. by 127cm.) circa
1740, marble top lacking.
